| Pharmacy technicians work under the supervision of licensed pharmacists. They label and fill prescriptions, order and maintain the pharmacys stock levels, fill unit-dose medication carts, conduct inventory checks, package and repackage medications, deliver prepared medications, and order and maintain equipment. |

| WORK ENVIRONMENT Pharmacy technicians work in hospital and community pharmacies, extended care facilities, home health care facilities and industry. HIGH SCHOOL PREPARATION A high school diploma or equivalent is required; courses in mathematics, biology, chemistry, typing and computer application are recommended. ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS Pharmacy technicians are trained in applied science degree programs at community colleges. Training takes one to two years, depending on the program, and covers basic pharmacology, medical terminology, ethical and legal considerations, drug distribution systems, intravenous admixture procedures, aseptic technique and organizational / clerical responsibilities. AVERAGE STARTING SALARY $18,000. |
